Foxboro Blog Top 12: Week 6

It was a relatively quiet week in the Top 12, with only the Ravens replacing last week's #12, Dolphins.  Other than the Pats who fell two spots and the Bears who fell three, everyone stood pat or adjusted a single spot..  This week the Ravens play the Packers and the Saint play the Pats, which could lead to some shakeups at the top of the board.

#1 – Denver Broncos

What are the odds that the Broncos remain atop the Top 12 next week? Unless the Saints smack down the Patriots, I have a hard time believing the Broncos will give me any cause to drop them with the Jags on tap.

Last Week: 1      Change: 0       Record: 5-0       Next Game: vs. Jaguars

#2 – New Orleans Saints

Needless to say, I'm not thrilled about the Saints coming to Foxboro with the Pats reeling from an ugly loss.

Last Week: 2      Change: 0       Record: 5-0   Next Game: @ Patriots

#3 – Seattle Seahawks

Seattle hasn't looked great on the road, making the need to lock up the NFC's #1 seed all that more important.

Last Week: 4      Change: +1       Record: 4-1      Next Game: vs. Titans

#4 – San Francisco 49ers

The Niners appear to be back on track for now. Then again, with the way the Rams and Texans are playing, it would have been hard for them to not look good.

Last Week: 5      Change: +1       Record: 3-2     Next Game: vs. Cardinals

#5 – New England Patriots

Can we chalk that game up to one of Brady's two annual games where he doesn't look that sharp?  Please?

Last Week: 3      Change: -2       Record: 4-1      Next Game: vs. Saints

#6 – Green Bay Packers

The Packers are slowly clawing their way back into the NFC North race.  Now they have to take care of the defending champs.

Last Week: 7      Change: +1       Record: 2-2       Next Game: @ Ravens

#7 – Indianapolis Colts

That was a huge win for Indy, who has to have a bye week in their sights with the way the rest of the AFC South looks right now.

Last Week: 8      Change: +1       Record: 4-1      Next Game: @ Chargers

#8 – Cincinnati Bengals

Yeah, the Bengals can make a case for being higher after a solid win last week, but they still have the stink of losing to the Browns on them.

Last Week: 9      Change: +1      Record: 3-2    Next Game: @ Bills

#9 – Chicago Bears

After two bad weeks in a row, the Bears may have a simple challenge in the winless Giants to get back on track.

Last Week: 6      Change: -3       Record: 3-2   Next Game: vs. Giantss

#10 – Kansas City Chiefs

KC looks solid but has yet to beat anyone of real merit.  They won't get a chance to change that this week with the Raiders coming to town.

Last Week: 11      Change: +1       Record: 5-0     Next Game: vs. Raiders

#11 – Detroit Lions

That was a huge blown chance for Detroit, who could have taken a dominant lead in the division.  Now, there's just one of the pack.

Last Week: 10      Change: -1      Record: 3-2     Next Game: @ Browns

#12 – Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens earned their way back on the board by downing the Phins.  They'll have a big test to pass to stay on with the Packers up this week.

Last Week: N/A      Change: N/A       Record: 3-2       Next Game: vs. Packers

Foxboro Blog Top 12: Week 6

It's a quiet week for the Top 12, as eight of the top nine teams all walked away with wins.  That's not to say that there wasn't some mild shifting going on, but nothing overly stunning.   With a lot of the big dogs playing sub-par teams, there is room for some excitement next week if our Top 12 underpeform.

#1 – San Francisco 49ers

The Niners have simply steamrolled their AFC East opponents the past two weeks by a combined score of 79-3.   I don't think you can make a stronger argument for them being #1.

Last Week: 2      Change: +1      Record: 4-1       Next Game: vs. Giants

#2 – Houston Texans

The Texans get their first taste of adversity by losing their star LB Cushing.   The Packers and Ravens loom large the next two weeks as well.   It's time for Houston to prove they belong among the league's elite.

Last Week: 1      Change: -1       Record: 5-0     Next Game: vs. Packers

#3 – Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons have had some close calls the past two weeks.  Still, I won't rain on their 5-0 parade by dropping them this week..

Last Week: 3      Change: 0       Record: 5-0       Next Game: vs. Raiders

#4 – New England Patriots

The Patriots have looked down right unstoppable at times.  Still, they always manage to do something that keeps me from being entirely sold on their performance.   Two weeks ago, it was the slow start against the Bills.  This week, they let the Broncos creep back within 10 after leading by 21.

Last Week: 4      Change: 0       Record: 3-2       Next Game: @ Seahawks

#5 – Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have been playing down to the competition, similar to last year.  A 9-6 win over the Chiefs?  Come on!   However, unlike last year, they are winning these poor performances instead of losing them.

Last Week: 5      Change: 0       Record: 4-1      Next Game: vs. Cowboys

#6 – Chicago Bears

With the Packers hovering under .500, and the Bears pulling off some impressive wins, it's certainly time to re-think who the top team in the NFC North is.  My vote goes to Chicago.

Last Week: 8      Change: +2       Record: 4-1       Next Game: Bye Week

#7 – Minnesota Vikings

The Vikes just keep on winning.  It's not always flashy, but their formula of sound defense and power running is a recipe for success.  They might slow down a bit as the season drags on, but they'll be in the playoff hunt the entire way.

Last Week: 12      Change: +5       Record: 4-1       Next Game: @ Redskins

#8 – New York Giants

The Giants have been up and down all season, and sometimes even within the confines of a single game.  Sunday in Cleveland was yet another contest where they looked horrendous before turning on the jets and blowing past their opponent.

Last Week: 11      Change: +3       Record: 3-2       Next Game: @ 49ers

#9 – Green Bay Packers

Surprisingly enough, the Packers might not even be the second best team in their division.  They have a HUGE statement game coming up next week against Houston.  2-4 would be completely unacceptable and indicate that Green Bay's problems may be bigger than the replacement refs.

Last Week: 6     Change: -3     Record: 2-3       Next Game: @ Texans

#10 – Arizona Cardinals

Just when I started believing, Kevin Kolb and the Cardinals pulled the rug out from under me.  Shame on you fellas.  It's going to be a hard climb for you up this board.

Last Week: 7    Change: -3      Record: 4-1       Next Game: vs. Buffalo

#11 – Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh is once again on the board after falling off.  I think the state of Pennsylvania is schizophrenic this year as you can never tell which team is going to show up.  In the battle for state supremacy, the slighly less manic team won out.

Last Week: N/A      Change: N/A       Record: 2-2       Next Game: @ Titans

#12 – Philadelphia Eagles

I thought strongly about knocking the Iggles off the board yet again after another turnover-laden loss.  However, something has to break the trend of them flip-flopping on and off week after week.  Maybe keeping them in the Top 12, just barely, this week with break the vicious cycle.

Last Week: 9      Change: -3       Record: 3-2       Next Game: vs. Lions

Foxboro Blog Top 12: Week 6

Things are getting a bit stagnant here at Foxboro Blog.  First, we have the nearly unanimous picks the past two weeks in the Pick ‘Em game.  Now we have a Top 12, where seven of the teams hold the exact same spot that they did the week before.  It’s been an odd NFL season to some degree.  First we had the lockout.  Then you have no Peyton Manning.   Green Bay, Baltimore, New England, and New Orleans have been solid, as expected, but then you have Buffalo, San Fran, Detroit, and Cincinnati all coming out of nowhere.  Normally things are flip-flopping around quite a bit this time of year, but it seems like we’ve hit a bit of an even keel in 2011.  With four of the twelve teams this week heading into a bye, things may not get very spicy next week either.

Green Bay did what a championship caliber team should do against an 0-5 team.  They dominated.

Tom Brady’s vintage game-winning drive is the talk of the town.  Still, the thing that I’m most excited about is that the Patriots won on Sunday because of their defense.   Worst in the league, they are no longer.

New Orleans was ripe for a fall in the rankings after losing at Tampa.  However, they get to hang onto the #4 spot due to the incompetency below them.

It might seem weird to put the Lions above San Fran, given the fact that they just lost at home to the Niners, but the Top 12 is based on your entire body of recent work.  As a result, I give the edge to Detroit.

This spot could have gone the Raiders, the Bengals, the Falcons, or even the Jets, but the G-Men have looked the most impressive the past several weeks.  The currently appear to have the edge in the NFC East.

Foxboro Blog Top 12: Week 6

There’s a new team on top of the rankings and for the first time in the history of this site’s Top 12, that team is the New England Patriots.  I think more long and hard about where I rank the Patriots than I do any other team.  I have to try and be fair and consistent, otherwise this entire rankings system becomes a joke.  I won’t deny that there’s some bias involved each week, but I don’t think anyone could look at this list at the moment and think I’m a homer who’s out of his mind.  I honestly believe this #1 ranking is more than well-deserved.

In other news, we welcome three new teams to the Top 12, Philadelphia, Tennessee, and Miami.  Leaving the list are the suddenly struggling Bears, the Redskins who respectably held their own against Indy, and the Packers, who can’t get by on their pre-season hype any longer.

I had pretty much made up my mind last week that unless the Jets throttled Denver, the winner of the Pats/Ravens matchup would deserve the top slot.  New England pulled off a classic victory and for the first time in a long time, they showed flashes of the champion teams of old.

It’s rare to move up a spot after a loss.  Honestly, though, that game could have easily gone either way.  If I’m going to promote the Patriots, it’s only fair to promote the Ravens who were this close to pulling off the first regular season win by a road team at Gillette since 2006.

A win at home against Cleveland won’t earn you much in my book.  I’m still not entirely sold on Pittsburgh, but some questionable performances by the teams above them account for their rise.

Win and drop three spots?  Before you call me a homer, remember this:  I dropped the Pats two spots after beating Buffalo in Week 3.  I also gave the Jets the benefit of the doubt three straight weeks in a row as the #1 team when they were far from the undisputed best. The bottom line is that the past two weeks, New York has been bailed out by Favre missing a wide open receiver and a fairly lame pass interference call.  A win is a win, but I don’t have to respect them for it.

That was a really ugly loss, and probably worthy of a bigger drop.  Also, in retrospect, they’ve had some less than convincing victories.  They did beat the Saints though, so I won’t drop them down past New Orleans just yet.

The G-Men don’t rise this week, but they’re quietly earning a lot of stock with me.  If they can avoid falling into the trap that is the flailing Cowboys, they could be due for a big rise next week.

Houston came dangerously close to losing to KC.  This team still seems a little schizo to me.  The upcoming bye week may be the only time this season where we know what to expect from them.

I’ve been flirting with the Eagles on this list for a couple of weeks now.  The QB uncertainty has kept them off the list.  Kevin Kolb’s big game against Atlanta erased any reasons I had to keep them off yet again.

Tennessee is playing some sneaky good football.  They could be the reason the Colts inexplicably miss out on the playoffs this year.

I wanted to put Miami back on the list, but that would have involved dropping last week’s #6 team, Green Bay, down seven slots to push them off the list.  That’s a little harsh given the Packers lost in overtime, not a blow-out.  The more I thought about it, though, Green Bay is in a tail spin, is currently .500, probably didnt’ deserve to be #6 last week anyway, and did just lose to the Dolphins.   Welcome back to the Top 12, Miami.
